Meaning

This verse from the book of Numbers in the Bible outlines the specific boundaries of the land allotted to the tribe of Judah. It describes the southern border of their territory, specifying that it extends from the wilderness of Zin to the coast of Edom, reaching all the way to the salt sea in the east. This precise delineation of land was important in ancient Israelite society as it helped to establish boundaries and ensure fairness in land distribution among the tribes. The wilderness of Zin was a vast desert region, while the coast of Edom refers to the region along the eastern side of the Dead Sea. The salt sea, also known as the Dead Sea, is a significant landmark that served as a natural boundary for the tribe of Judah. By understanding these geographical references, readers can gain insight into the historical context and significance of this verse in the broader narrative of the Israelites' settlement in the Promised Land.
