Book of Numbers - Chapter 36 - Verse 2

36:2
And they said, The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers, the Israelites are recounting the story of how God commanded Moses to allocate the land of Canaan as an inheritance for the children of Israel. The specific case being discussed is the inheritance of Zelophehad, a man who had passed away without any sons to inherit his portion of the land. In this situation, the daughters of Zelophehad stepped forward to claim their father's inheritance. The people acknowledge that it was the Lord who had given this command to Moses, instructing him to ensure that Zelophehad's daughters were not left out of the inheritance. This verse highlights the importance of justice and fairness in the distribution of land among the Israelites, as well as the recognition of women's rights to inherit property. It serves as a reminder of God's concern for justice and equality, even in matters as seemingly small as the distribution of land.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see a strong emphasis on the importance of obeying the commands of the Lord. The phrase "The LORD commanded my lord" highlights the authority and sovereignty of God in directing the actions of His people. The concept of inheritance is also significant here, as the land being given to the children of Israel by lot was a fulfillment of God's promise to His chosen people. The specific example of Zelophehad's daughters receiving their inheritance showcases the justice and fairness of God in ensuring that all members of His community are provided for, regardless of gender. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the themes of obedience to God's commands, trust in His provision, and the importance of justice and equality within the community of believers. Through this passage, we are reminded of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and His care for all His children.
