Book of Numbers - Chapter 4 - Verse 18

4:18
Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:

Meaning

In this verse, the Lord commands the Israelites not to eliminate the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites. The Kohathites were one of the four major clans within the tribe of Levi, along with the Gershonites, Merarites, and priests. They were responsible for the most sacred objects in the Tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant, the mercy seat, the table of showbread, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils used in the holy place. It was crucial for the Kohathites to continue their duties within the Levitical tribe to maintain the proper order and functioning of the Tabernacle. By not cutting off the Kohathites from among the Levites, the Lord ensured that the sacred objects would be handled with the proper care and reverence required by their holy significance.
