Book of Numbers - Chapter 7 - Verse 5

7:5
Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service.

Meaning

In this verse, God is instructing Moses to take specific items from the Israelites so that they may be used for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, which was a portable sanctuary that housed the Ark of the Covenant. The items to be taken were then to be given to the Levites, who were members of the tribe of Levi and were designated as the priests and caretakers of the tabernacle. Each Levite was given items according to his role and responsibilities within the tabernacle. This process ensured that the tabernacle was properly equipped for worship and service to God.

By instructing Moses to take items from the Israelites and give them to the Levites, God was establishing a system of order and organization within the tabernacle. The specific allocation of items to each Levite according to his service also highlighted the importance of everyone playing their part in carrying out the duties of the tabernacle. This verse emphasizes the idea of serving God through the roles and responsibilities assigned to each individual, and the importance of cooperation and dedication in fulfilling those roles within the community.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Numbers 8:19 involves the concept of a division of labor within the community of believers. In this context, the Israelites are instructed to take the Levites and assign them specific roles within the tabernacle of the congregation. This division of labor reflects the idea that each member of the community has a unique role to play in serving God and their fellow believers. By delegating specific tasks to the Levites according to their abilities, the community ensures that the tabernacle functions smoothly and that the worship of God is carried out effectively. This verse also highlights the importance of service in the life of a believer, as it emphasizes the need for each individual to contribute to the work of God in a meaningful way.
