Book of Numbers - Chapter 9 - Verse 13

9:13
But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the LORD in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.

Meaning

This particular verse from the Bible signifies the importance of observing the Passover and obeying the laws and commandments set by the Lord. It emphasizes the significance of cleanliness and the act of not being on a journey, which are prerequisites for participating in the Passover ceremony. The verse states that anyone who is clean but chooses not to partake in the Passover offering at the appointed time will face consequences, as they are not fulfilling their religious duties. The phrase "even the same soul shall be cut off from among his people" suggests that there will be a separation from one's community and spiritual ties if this obligation is neglected. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of following religious rituals and obligations, and the repercussions of failing to do so. It highlights the concept of accountability and bearing the consequences of one's actions, especially in the context of religious practices and beliefs.

Theological Overview

One significant theological interpretation of this verse revolves around the concept of obedience and reverence towards God. The act of keeping the Passover was not merely a ritual but a commandment from the Lord to the Israelites as a way to remember and honor His saving power. By forgoing the observance of the Passover, one would not only be disobeying God's specific instructions but also showing a lack of faith and gratitude towards Him. This verse highlights the seriousness of neglecting God's appointed times of worship and the consequences that come with such disobedience. The word "clean" in this context refers to someone who is ceremonially pure and therefore fit to participate in the Passover. The phrase "cut off from among his people" implies being separated from the community of believers as a punishment for failing to fulfill this sacred duty. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring and obeying God's commands at all times.
