Book of Psalms - Chapter 125 - Verse 5

125:5
As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

Meaning

In this verse, it is stated that those who choose to follow crooked paths and engage in sinful behavior will ultimately be led astray by the Lord, along with others who also commit iniquities. This message serves as a warning to those who may stray from the righteous path and emphasizes the consequences of choosing to follow a life of wrongdoing. The mention of peace being upon Israel contrasts with the fate of those who turn aside to wickedness, indicating that peace and blessings await those who choose to remain faithful and upright in their ways. This verse conveys the importance of staying true to God's teachings and avoiding the temptations of sin, as deviating from the right path can lead to undesirable outcomes both in this life and in the afterlife. Ultimately, the verse serves as a reminder of the importance of staying steadfast in faith and righteousness in order to receive the blessings and peace promised to those who remain faithful.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of this verse, it is important to note the contrast between those who follow crooked ways and those who seek peace in Israel. The phrase "turn aside unto their crooked ways" implies a deviation from the path of righteousness and obedience to God's commandments. This suggests that those who choose to walk in sin and disobedience will ultimately be led astray by the Lord, along with the workers of iniquity. The mention of being led forth with the workers of iniquity emphasizes the consequences of following a path of wickedness, as well as the divine judgment that awaits those who reject God's ways.

On the other hand, the promise of peace upon Israel serves as a contrast to the fate of those who deviate from the right path. The term "peace" in this context symbolizes the blessings and favor of God upon His chosen people. By choosing to walk in obedience and righteousness, the people of Israel can experience the peace that comes from living according to God's will. This verse thus highlights the importance of staying faithful to God and His commandments, as well as the consequences of straying from His path.
