Book of Psalms - Chapter 37 - Verse 4

37:4
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

Meaning

When it says to delight yourself in the Lord, it means finding joy, satisfaction, and contentment in your relationship with God. This involves seeking His presence, spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and worshiping Him with all your heart. When you delight yourself in the Lord, you align yourself with His will and His purposes for your life. As you grow closer to God, your desires start to align with His desires for you. This verse assures us that when we prioritize our relationship with God and seek to please Him above all else, He will bless us by fulfilling the desires of our hearts. This doesn't mean that we will get everything we want, but rather that God will give us the desires that are in line with His perfect plan for us. Trusting in the Lord and delighting in Him leads to a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that goes beyond material possessions or temporary pleasures.

Theological Overview

When exploring the theological interpretation of the verse 'Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.', it is important to understand the concept of delighting in the Lord. To delight in the Lord means to find joy and satisfaction in Him, to take pleasure in His presence and His ways. This verse encourages believers to make the Lord their utmost delight and priority in life. By doing so, God promises to fulfill the desires of their hearts. This does not mean that God will necessarily give us everything we want, but rather that as we align our desires with His will, He will grant us the true desires that are in line with His purpose for us.

Furthermore, a word study of 'delight' in this verse reveals that the original Hebrew word used is 'anag', which conveys the idea of being soft, delicate, and pliable. This suggests that delighting in the Lord involves having a heart that is soft and open to His leading, willing to be molded and shaped by His will. By delighting in the Lord in such a way, believers can experience the fulfillment of their deepest desires as they align themselves with God's perfect plan for their lives.
