Book of Psalms - Chapter 51 - Verse 12

51:12
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Psalms, the speaker is pleading to God to restore the joy that comes from salvation. Salvation is often understood as the deliverance from sin and its consequences, through the grace of God. The joy of salvation is the feeling of peace, gratitude, and hope that comes from knowing one's sins are forgiven and that eternal life is promised. The speaker is asking God to renew this joy within them, indicating a desire to return to a state of spiritual contentment and closeness with God. The second part of the verse, "uphold me with thy free spirit," can be interpreted as a request for God's guidance and strength to sustain the speaker in their faith journey. The "free spirit" may refer to the Holy Spirit, believed to provide believers with spiritual gifts, empowerment, and comfort. Thus, this verse expresses a plea for spiritual renewal, support, and guidance from God in the face of spiritual struggles or challenges.
