Book of Psalms - Chapter 69 - Verse 1

69:1
To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, A Psalm of David. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul.

Meaning

Psalm 69 is a cry of distress and a plea for deliverance from enemies. David, the author of this Psalm, is in a desperate situation where he feels overwhelmed by the troubles that surround him. The use of the metaphor of waters rising up to his soul conveys the sense of drowning in overwhelming circumstances. By calling out to God for salvation, David acknowledges his utter dependence on God's help and intervention. The title "To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim" indicates that this Psalm was intended for the chief musician to be sung with a musical accompaniment on a lily. The imagery of the lily symbolizes purity and beauty, contrasting with the turmoil and distress described in the Psalm. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder of the need to turn to God in times of trouble and trust in His power to save and protect us.
