Book of Psalms - Chapter 74 - Verse 9

74:9
We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.

Meaning

In this verse, the speaker is expressing a sense of despair and uncertainty. They lament the lack of signs or indications that would provide guidance or reassurance. The absence of prophets, who were traditionally seen as messengers from God, also adds to the feeling of being lost and without direction. The phrase "neither is there among us any that knoweth how long" suggests a sense of hopelessness about the future, as there is no one who can offer insight or understanding about what is to come. This verse conveys a feeling of being adrift and in need of divine intervention or guidance. It reflects a longing for signs and prophecies to provide clarity and reassurance in a time of confusion and doubt.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse 'We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long.' suggests that it reflects a time of spiritual darkness and uncertainty among the people. The reference to not seeing 'our signs' could indicate a lack of divine guidance or intervention in their lives. The absence of prophets signifies a period where God's messages were not being communicated through chosen individuals. The phrase 'any that knoweth how long' may indicate a sense of despair and confusion regarding the duration of their struggles or challenges. This verse could serve as a reminder for believers to remain steadfast in their faith even during times of uncertainty or perceived silence from God.
