The speaker, most often interpreted as God, is indicating that despite calling out and offering guidance, the people have not listened or paid attention to the voice. This verse emphasizes the idea of rejection and refusal to acknowledge the speaker. It conveys a sense of sadness and rejection, as the people have chosen not to follow or accept what is being offered to them. The verse serves as a warning about the consequences of not heeding the guidance and wisdom being given, suggesting that without listening and obeying, the people are missing out on important opportunities or blessings. It highlights the importance of active listening and following through with the messages being conveyed. Overall, this verse conveys the theme of missed opportunities and the consequences of not hearkening to the voice of the speaker.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the word "hearken" holds significant theological implications. The Hebrew word used for "hearken" is "shama," which not only means to listen but also to obey and act upon what is being heard. This emphasizes God's desire for His people to not only hear His voice but to also respond in obedience. The refusal of the people to hearken to God's voice signifies a rebellion against His authority and a rejection of His guidance. The word "none" in the phrase "and Israel would none of me" is translated from the Hebrew word "ab" which means to refuse or reject. This highlights the deliberate choice of Israel to reject God and turn away from Him. The verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of heeding God's voice. It prompts readers to reflect on their own response to God's call and the significance of listening and obeying His commands.
