In this verse, the psalmist expresses a plea to God for help against the proud and violent adversaries who are seeking to harm him. The word "proud" in this context can refer to those who are arrogant, haughty, and opposed to God's ways. The "assemblies of violent men" point to a group of people who are ruthless and aggressive in their pursuit of the psalmist's life. The phrase "sought after my soul" speaks to their intent to destroy the psalmist completely. The psalmist recognizes that these enemies do not acknowledge God or hold Him in reverence.
