Book of Romans - Chapter 6 - Verse 8

6:8
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Meaning

When we are dead with Christ, it means that we have crucified our old selves and have chosen to live a new life in Him. This signifies a spiritual rebirth and a turning away from our sinful nature. By dying to ourselves and being raised with Christ, we become united with Him in His death and resurrection. This verse encourages believers to have faith that just as we have died with Christ, we will also live with Him in a new and transformed life. This new life is characterized by a deeper relationship with God, a renewed sense of purpose, and the hope of eternal life in His presence. It reminds us that our spiritual journey is not just about dying to sin, but also about experiencing the joy of living in Christ and being transformed by His love and grace.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the theological interpretation centers around the concept of dying to self and living in Christ. The idea of being "dead with Christ" refers to believers putting to death their old, sinful selves and being united with Christ in his death on the cross. This signifies a profound transformation where believers abandon their old way of life and receive new life in Christ. The phrase "we believe that we shall also live with him" speaks to the promise of resurrection and eternal life for those who are united with Christ. This verse emphasizes the close relationship believers have with Jesus, not only in His death but also in His resurrection. Through faith in Christ, believers have the hope of sharing in His resurrected life and dwelling with Him for all eternity. It highlights the central tenet of the Christian faith that through dying to self and being united with Christ, believers can experience newness of life and ultimate victory over sin and death.
