9:33
As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Romans reflects the idea that Jesus Christ is both a stumbling stone and a rock of offense to those who do not believe in him. In the context of this verse, "laying in Sion" refers to Jesus being established in the spiritual Zion, a place of divine presence and power. The stumbling stone represents the rejection of Jesus by those who refuse to accept him as the Savior. Those who stumble over this stone are the ones who find offense in the message of the gospel.

On the other hand, those who believe in Jesus and trust in him will not be put to shame. This means that those who have faith in Christ will not be disappointed or disgraced because their trust is in the one who is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. believers can have confidence that their faith is well-placed and that God will never let them down. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith in Jesus and the assurance that comes from putting one's trust in him.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse could be that Jesus Christ, referred to as the stumblingstone and rock of offence, is both a stumbling block and a source of salvation. In the context of the verse, those who do not believe in Christ may stumble over Him and reject Him as their Savior, leading to shame. However, those who place their trust in Him will not be put to shame and will find redemption. The reference to "whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed" highlights the importance of faith in Christ for salvation. The use of the term "rock of offence" also suggests that Jesus may be a stumbling block for some people due to His teachings or the scandal of the cross. Overall, this verse emphasizes the dual nature of Christ as both a stumbling block and a firm foundation for those who believe in Him.
