Book of Titus - Chapter 1 - Verse 9

1:9
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Meaning

In this verse, the writer emphasizes the importance of holding onto the teachings of the faith and using them as a foundation for spreading the truth to others. By remaining faithful to the teachings they have received, believers are able to be equipped with sound doctrine that not only allows them to encourage and uplift fellow believers but also to effectively counter opposition from those who deny or reject the truth. This verse underscores the significance of staying true to the core principles of the faith and using them as a basis for guiding others towards a deeper understanding and acceptance of the gospel. It highlights the role of believers in defending the faith and sharing it with those who may challenge or oppose it.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the phrase "holding fast the faithful word" emphasizes the importance of holding on to the teachings of faith with steadfastness and commitment. By staying true to the teachings received, individuals are able to equip themselves with "sound doctrine" which in turn enables them to exhort and convince those who oppose or challenge the faith. The term "gainsayers" refers to those who contradict or deny the truth of the faith, and the ability to exhort and convince them comes from a deep understanding and adherence to the faithful word. This verse highlights the dual purpose of sound doctrine: to encourage and persuade both believers and non-believers in the truths of the faith. It serves as a reminder for believers to remain rooted in the teachings they have received, so that they may effectively share and defend their faith in the face of opposition.
