Book of Exodus - Chapter 21 - Verse 14

21:14
But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

Meaning

In this verse, the concept of justice and accountability is highlighted as it pertains to intentional acts of violence. The verse emphasizes that if someone commits a premeditated murder against another person, they are not to seek refuge at the altar of God as a means of escaping punishment. This principle underscores the seriousness of taking another person's life and the need for appropriate consequences. The commandment to take the offender from the altar signifies that even acts of repentance or seeking forgiveness cannot absolve someone of full responsibility for their actions in cases of deliberate harm. This verse serves as a reminder that true justice requires accountability and that no one is above the law, not even within the sacred space of an altar.
