Book of Exodus - Chapter 26 - Verse 19

26:19
And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for his two tenons, and two sockets under another board for his two tenons.

Meaning

The verse you have just read is part of the Book of Exodus, where the instructions for building the Tabernacle are being given to Moses by God. In this particular verse, God commands Moses to make forty sockets of silver to support the twenty boards that will form the walls of the Tabernacle. Each board is to have two sockets underneath it to hold it securely in place. The use of silver for the sockets signifies purity and value, reflecting the importance of the Tabernacle as a sacred place of worship for the Israelites. This detailed instruction highlights the precision and care with which God wants the Tabernacle to be constructed, emphasizing its significance as a place where His presence will dwell among His people. By following these specific directions, the Israelites would ensure that the Tabernacle would be a fitting dwelling place for God and a center of worship for the community.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the construction of the forty silver sockets mentioned in this verse is that it symbolizes the foundation and stability of the tabernacle. The sockets, being made of silver, a precious metal often associated with redemption, may represent the redemption of God's people through the sacrifices and rituals performed in the tabernacle. Additionally, the number forty in the Bible is often seen as a symbol of testing and preparation. In this context, the forty silver sockets could signify the testing and purification of the tabernacle as a holy place set apart for the worship of God.

From a word study perspective, the use of the word "sockets" in the original Hebrew text can be translated as "bases" or "supports." This sheds light on the structural function of the sockets in supporting the boards that made up the walls of the tabernacle. The specific instructions for placing two sockets under each board emphasize the importance of stability and balance in the construction of the tabernacle, reflecting the precision and care with which God's dwelling place was to be built by the Israelites.
