Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 22 - Verse 18

22:18
Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament, God is speaking to the prophet Ezekiel about the spiritual state of the people of Israel. The metaphor used in this verse describes how the people of Israel have become like worthless material in the eyes of God, much like dross in a furnace. Dross is the impurities that rise to the surface when metals such as silver are melted down. In this context, God is comparing the people of Israel to dross, emphasizing their sinful and corrupt nature. The mention of brass, tin, iron, lead, and silver further emphasizes the state of impurity and worthlessness that the people have fallen into. This verse serves as a strong warning to the people of Israel to recognize their sins and turn back to God before facing the consequences of their actions. It is a powerful reminder of the need for repentance and spiritual cleansing in order to restore their relationship with God.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Ezekiel, the prophet uses the metaphor of refining metals in a furnace to describe the spiritual state of the house of Israel. The term "dross" refers to the impurities that rise to the surface when metals are melted down. In this context, the house of Israel is compared to dross, indicating that they have become impure and worthless in the eyes of God. The mention of brass, tin, iron, lead, and silver further symbolizes the various forms of sin and disobedience that have infiltrated the nation. Just as metals must undergo intense heat in order to be purified, the people of Israel are urged to undergo a spiritual purification process to rid themselves of their impurities and be restored to a state of righteousness. This passage serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of straying from God's will and the necessity of repentance and spiritual renewal.
