Book of Genesis - Chapter 29 - Verse 8

29:8
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

Meaning

In this verse, the shepherds are speaking to Rachel, who has arrived at the well with her father's sheep. They explain that they are unable to water their flocks until all the other shepherds have gathered together and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well. This demonstrates the importance of cooperation and community in the daily tasks of caring for the sheep. Each shepherd relies on the others to work together to provide water for their animals, showing a reliance on teamwork and unity. The rolling of the stone from the well's mouth is a physical barrier that must be overcome before the sheep can be watered, highlighting the practical challenges that the shepherds face in their work. Overall, this verse emphasizes the need for collaboration and coordination in order to effectively care for the flocks, illustrating the interdependence of the shepherds in their shared responsibility of tending to the animals.
