Book of Genesis - Chapter 38 - Verse 8

38:8
And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

Meaning

In this verse, Judah instructs Onan to fulfill the levirate marriage custom by marrying his deceased brother's wife in order to produce offspring to carry on his brother's lineage. This practice, as outlined in the book of Deuteronomy, was a way to ensure that a man's legacy and inheritance would be preserved even after his death. By marrying his brother's widow and bearing children with her, Onan would be fulfilling his duty to his brother and his family. It was not a matter of personal choice, but rather a cultural and religious obligation to continue the family line. This verse highlights the importance of familial responsibility and the customs that were followed in ancient times to honor and preserve one's lineage. The levirate marriage custom was a way to ensure that no family line would die out and that every individual had a chance at leaving a lasting legacy through their descendants.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse in which Judah instructs Onan to fulfill the duty of marrying his brother's widow and raising up offspring for his deceased brother is that of the concept of levirate marriage. In ancient Jewish culture, it was a custom for a man to marry his brother's widow if the brother died childless. This practice aimed to ensure that the widow was provided for, and to keep the deceased brother's lineage alive. Some theologians view this verse as highlighting the importance of familial duty and responsibility within the community. Additionally, this verse underscores the significance of continuity within the family line and the preservation of inheritance. Delving into the original Hebrew texts and word studies can provide further insight into the cultural and religious contexts surrounding this verse, shedding light on the significance of the duty being discussed.
