Book of Joshua - Chapter 22 - Verse 28

22:28
Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you.

Meaning

Throughout the Bible, altars are often used as symbols of worship and communication with God. In this particular verse, the speakers are emphasizing the significance of the altar of the LORD that was built by their ancestors. They explain that the altar was not constructed for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness or a reminder of the relationship between them and future generations. It serves as a tangible representation of their faith and connection to God, a legacy passed down through the generations. By pointing to the altar, they are affirming their commitment to the Lord and his covenant with his people. The verse highlights the importance of traditions, symbols, and rituals in preserving the spiritual heritage of a community. It also emphasizes the relationship between the past, present, and future, illustrating the continuity of faith and worship across time.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse from Joshua 22 focuses on the importance of symbols and reminders in the spiritual life of the Israelites. The altar described here was not built for making burnt offerings or sacrifices, but rather as a witness between the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh and the rest of Israel. It served as a visual reminder of their shared covenant with the Lord and helped to promote unity and understanding among the different tribes. The mention of future generations being able to refer to this altar demonstrates the significance of passing down spiritual truths and traditions to future believers. Furthermore, the word "pattern" used in this verse emphasizes the exact replication of the original altar, indicating the importance of accuracy and adherence to God's instructions. Overall, this verse highlights the importance of symbols, traditions, and remembrance in the spiritual walk of believers, providing a lesson that is relevant for all generations.
