Book of Matthew - Chapter 9 - Verse 36

9:36
But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Meaning

When Jesus saw the crowds in need of guidance and care, he was filled with compassion for them. The image of the people being like sheep without a shepherd portrays their vulnerability, helplessness, and need for guidance. Sheep are known to be defenseless animals that rely entirely on a shepherd for protection, direction, and provision. In the same way, the multitudes were lost and scattered, lacking proper leadership and direction in their lives. Jesus' response demonstrates his deep empathy and concern for the spiritual well-being of the people. He saw their struggles, their weariness, and their confusion, and his heart went out to them. This verse highlights Jesus' role as the compassionate shepherd who came to guide, protect, and restore those who are lost and in need of his love and care.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse which states that Jesus was moved with compassion upon seeing the multitudes because they were like sheep without a shepherd, we see a powerful representation of Jesus' heart for the lost and the broken. In this context, the word "compassion" in Greek is "σπλαγχνίζομαι" (splanchnizomai), which conveys a deep emotional response that originates from within one's innermost being. This word illustrates the depth of Jesus' care and concern for those who were lost and in need of guidance. Additionally, the imagery of sheep without a shepherd highlights the spiritual guidance and leadership that the people lacked. This portrayal emphasizes Jesus as the ultimate Good Shepherd who guides and cares for His flock. The verse underscores Jesus' role as the source of comfort, direction, and protection for those who are lost and vulnerable. Overall, this passage offers a profound insight into Jesus' character and his unwavering love for humanity.
