Book of Matthew - Chapter 9 - Verse 37

9:37
Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

Meaning

When Jesus spoke to his disciples about the plentiful harvest and the few laborers, he was emphasizing the urgency and importance of spreading the message of the gospel. The "harvest" refers to the people in need of salvation, guidance, and love. Just as a harvest must be gathered before it spoils, the souls of people must be reached and saved before it is too late. The "laborers" represent those who are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ and minister to those in need. Jesus was expressing the need for more people to step up and take on the responsibility of spreading the gospel and serving others in his name. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to actively engage in the work of the Lord and be willing vessels for His kingdom. It challenges us to not be complacent or indifferent, but to actively participate in the mission of bringing others to know Jesus and experience His love and grace.

Theological Overview

When Jesus said, "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few," he was making a theological statement about the abundance of souls ready to receive the message of the Gospel. The word "harvest" in this verse can be seen as a metaphor for the work of spreading the teachings of Christ to all corners of the world. The image of a harvest evokes the idea of reaping what has been sown, indicating that there are people who are ripe and ready to receive the truth of God's word. However, the scarcity of labourers highlights the need for more people to go out and share the message of salvation with others. In a word study, one can delve into the deeper meaning of "labourers" and reflect on the implications of being called to work in the fields of the Lord. Ultimately, this verse serves as a call to action, urging believers to take up the task of spreading the Gospel in a world hungry for spiritual nourishment.
