Book of Numbers - Chapter 35 - Verse 2

35:2
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.

Meaning

In this verse, God is instructing Moses to command the children of Israel to allocate cities to the tribe of Levi for their dwelling. The Levites were one of the twelve tribes of Israel, but unlike the other tribes, they were not given a portion of land as inheritance. Instead, they were appointed to be priests and serve in the tabernacle. Therefore, they relied on the other tribes for their livelihood. The cities and suburbs mentioned in the verse were to be provided by the other tribes as a form of support for the Levites, ensuring that they had a place to live and resources to sustain themselves while carrying out their duties in the tabernacle.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Numbers, God instructs Moses to command the children of Israel to give the Levites cities to dwell in from the lands that were to be given to the tribes of Israel. The Levites were to be given suburbs around these cities as well. This command was significant as it highlighted the special role of the Levites in the community. As the tribe responsible for the religious duties and service in the tabernacle, the Levites needed to be distributed throughout the land to fulfill their duties. The word "suburbs" in this context refers to open land or fields surrounding the cities, which would provide space for the Levites to raise animals or cultivate crops to sustain themselves. Through this command, the Levites were designated as a separate and consecrated group, set apart for the service of the Lord.
